Wellington Roller Derby Club

WRD’s Mission Statement:

Wellington Roller Derby is a women’s sports league that is run by the skaters and for the skaters, based in Mount Forest, Ontario.  WRD is built by a dedicated group of volunteers to play and promote competitive women’s roller derby and athleticism.  As a league, WRD will support our community and strive to be an inclusive group based on mutual respect, fairness and positive behaviour.

The Vision for WRD:

our vision is to be excellent role models for our community by having a league of diversified women, ages 18 and up from all walks of life, free from discrimination of any kind, focusing on positive female images and empowerment, a sense of community, positive sporting behaviour, and athleticism.  We strive to be the foremost sports league in our community for audiences young and old.
We provide the opportunity:

– for women’s athleticism
– To provide empowerment, skill training and development for women in the sport
– to compete for our fans
– to promote roller derby in our community
– to create bonds of friendship through the common ground of competitiveness

The Feims

Are a team that is comprised of players that have passed the tryout process within the WRD league – these tryouts are open to skaters within the WRD league, or outside the league.  This team is primarily a higher level travel team, and is made up of more experienced players. Due to lower numbers within WRD, the Feims have been put on hold for the time being.

The Bloody Marys

Are a team made up of our experienced veteran skaters, and newer skaters that have come through our “Fresh Skater Recruitment” program.  These newer skaters have passed a minumum set of skills that is dictated by WFTDA, and the coaching staff have evaluated their readyness to play in a bout with the team.  The Bloody Mary’s are a combination travel/home team.

What you love about derby?
An easier question would be what I don’t like about derby – nothing! Derby is a game where it is not only physically challenging but there is so much strategy and thought that goes into each jam making it mentally challenging as well. Derby is not only a sport but a community of strong, supportive women who may knock each other down on the track but build each other up in every other way.

What you love about derby?
Derby as a sport is very progressive.  It encourages society to see women as strong, capable people who can play a full-contact sport and play it well.  Women are often stereotyped as fragile or “too nice” for full contact sports.  When I first started derby I got many comments of, “YOU play roller derby?!” I am petite and have always been made fun of for my height but derby taught me to use my height as an advantage.  It took a lot of mental training to get the comments out of my head from people in my past telling me “you can’t do that, you’re too short/small.” Derby taught me I CAN and encourages me to face my fears and conquer them.
I also love how derby is leading the way in working with the LGBTQ+ community and acknowledging in their policies that trans, non-binary and others who identify in different ways than the traditional ‘male’ and ‘female’ are welcome in this sport.

What would you bring to a deserted island?
Everything.  I mean, is this island hot or cold?  Shady or sunny? There are too many variables, I need to bring everything.  I would never survive on those shows where you can only bring 10 things into the wilderness.  I would probably die without coffee and my pillow and my sunglasses…I have sensitive eyes…

What you love about derby?
OMG where do I begin? Everything! The passion, the enthusiasm, the determination to succeed. I love the fact I get to hit people, that’s one of the best parts of the sport! Never have I played a sport before where my teammates were so supportive on and off the track. I love everything about derby!!

What would you bring to a deserted island?
